How to Stay Safe and Prepared While Driving Back to School

How to Stay Safe and Prepared While Driving Back to School
Posted By: Anica Oaks on July 27, 2020

Now that summer is drawing to a close, it’s time to start thinking about your trek back to school. While you’ve likely driven this route many times, it’s still important to play it safe so that you don’t end up as a statistic. While you can’t avoid every accident, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk. To help you arrive at school in one piece, here are a few tips to help you stay safe and prepared while driving back to school.

Pack Some Essentials

When you’re driving, you never know if you’ll face an emergency that requires specialized tools to overcome. That’s why it’s good to pack your car with a few essentials to ensure you’re prepared to handle most common roadside emergencies. Items such as a first aid kit, jumper cables, a flashlight, and other similar items will help keep you safe and ensure you aren’t delayed longer than necessary.

Prepare Your Vehicle

Whether you have a 30-minute drive ahead of you or your destination is several hours away, it’s important to ensure that your vehicle is prepared to take on the trip successfully. The best way to do this is to have your vehicle repaired and maintained before you leave for school. Car repair is one of the most important yet most-often overlooked tasks of students returning to college.

Don’t find yourself broken down on the side of the road due to an avoidable problem.

Eliminate Distractions

Though it seems routine, driving a vehicle is actually quite a demanding task. Therefore, it’s important to eliminate distractions in your vehicle as much as possible while you’re driving. Put your phone in a location where it’s out of reach so that you aren’t tempted to answer texts that come in. You should also make sure that you have playlists set up before you leave so that you aren’t distracted trying to find your favorite song.

Avoid Driving at Night

Though changing seasons and long drives sometimes make this unavoidable, it’s best to try and avoid driving at night as much as possible. Especially when you’re driving on fairly unfamiliar roads, driving at night can put you at serious risk of an accident. Try to leave for school early in the day so that most or all of your drive takes place during daylight hours. In addition to being safer, this will give you more time to settle in once you arrive on campus.
Though taking risks while you’re driving may make things more convenient or more exciting, it’s not worth the potential cost. Car accidents can permanently alter your life in ways that you’ll always regret. Do your best, then, to avoid taking risks and instead find your excitement enjoying fun times with your friends at school.
