Philanthropic App Aims To Raise $1B For HBCUs In Five Years

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on August 21, 2020 In an effort to address the ongoing financial challenges faced by the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), HBCU Change - a new app that makes charitable giving easy and fun -- has announced a mission to raise $1 billion for HBCUs over the next five years. The recently-launched app works by rounding up purchases to the nearest dollar. It then collects the change in an HBCU Change account that is linked to your credit or debit card and donates these funds each month to the HBCU of your choice. The service keeps track of your contributions over time for reporting during tax season and displays which schools and class years are raising the most funds. So far, Alabama State University, Benedict College, Clark Atlanta University, Florida A&M University, Fort Valley State University, and Morris Brown College have signed on as early beneficiaries during its initial phase with additional schools to follow throughout the rest of the year. "HBCUs have always been vulnerable to economic fluctuations," says HBCU Change founder Xavier Peoples. "Now, the impact of the pandemic has presented an even more serious threat to the stability of our beloved schools. I created HBCU Change to empower alums, philanthropists and general supporters to give back to these institutions in a consistent and accessible way." Peoples and his development team plan to meet their billion dollar goal through a strategic campaign of social media and influencer marketing tactics. The funds raised in this effort will go toward school endowment and scholarship funds. The HBCU Change challenge comes amid a recent wave of large HBCU donations, including massive contributions from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and humanitarian MacKenzie Scott.
