How to Decide if a Job in Construction Is Right for You

How to Decide if a Job in Construction Is Right for You
Posted By: Anica Oaks on September 01, 2020

We all want not just a job, but a lifetime of doing something that we enjoy doing. We start usually young, and with an expectation that we will learn and improve in our chosen profession. If you have thought seriously about getting involved in construction jobs, there are some things to know that will help you decide if it is the right choice. The starting point of most construction jobs is laborer or helper. It feels like "paying your dues,” but it is the foundation of your on-the-job education that can lead to different job titles.

Education Requirements

High-school education is desired, but not required in many jobs as a laborer or helper. Excellent high-school level math skills will be needed in many situations as you may need to measure things or do calculations to accomplish specific tasks. Most construction workers and helpers get their training on-the-job. Some positions like an electrician helper, plumber, or pipefitters require a high school diploma or GED. If you have training in blueprint reading, welding, or other vocational subjects, you will be a valuable new-hire.

Personal Preferences

Not all construction work gets done out-doors, but much of it does.

If you like being outside, have a strong, healthy body, and enjoy problem-solving, you may find that a construction job is a perfect choice. You can learn more about construction jobs from this article. What Does A Construction Worker Do?

No experience is necessary with most construction jobs, but there are some standard qualifications that you can expect to need to meet:

- You will need to have good communication skills.
- Most projects will come with written instructions. Your reading skills will need to be dependable.
- You will need to be able to see colors well and distinguish between them. Things are often color-coded on a construction site.
- You will need basic math skills.
- Mechanical skills are important because it is very likely that you will operate and maintain equipment.
- Physical stamina is a requirement for laborers and helpers. Many of the tasks are strenuous, and you will spend many hours on your feet.
- Physical strength is also going to be vital as you must often lift heavy materials or equipment.

There is much to consider when deciding if one of the many different construction jobs is a good choice. The best advice may be that you choose one and find out for yourself.
