Oakwood University Receives over $1.4 million dollars of Alabama CARES Act Funds for Higher Education

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on September 14, 2020 In a press release on Thursday, September 10, 2020, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced that $72.34 million of the CARES Act funding for higher education institutions will be awarded. When the Alabama Governor asked the public to submit suggested areas of impact to respond to the disruption of the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic in early June 2020, President Leslie Pollard quickly appointed a team of Oakwood University administrators to create the request for grant support. The three writers were Dr. John Anderson, Associate Provost; Dr. Prudence Pollard, VP for Research & Faculty Development; and Ms. Sabrina Cotton, VP for Financial Administration. Their work has paid off, and Oakwood has been named an awardee of $1,455,632. "I am grateful for the support of our rapid-response team of administrators, as well as the Grants and Research Office, and our Office of Development in the Division of Advancement. We are also grateful for the support of Governor Ivey, our Assembly representatives, and our Senators in the Alabama Legislature," said Dr. Leslie Pollard. "This grant funding will facilitate Oakwood's continuing educational impact on our students, and on the citizens in our community." The State of Alabama has allotted $1.8 billion for the Coronavirus Relief Fund as one of the provisions for the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The CARES Act requires that the payments from the Coronavirus Relief Fund only be used to cover expenses that are necessary expenditures incurred due to the public health emergency with respect to COVID-19. Oakwood University requested reimbursement and financial support from Governor Ivey to address the past and future impact of COVID-19 on the University, its students, the community, and the ability of our HBCU to continue its educational mission, which now includes the innovative mission of the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering, and the building of our off-campus Community Health Action Center and Clinic. "In our requests, we chose potential initiatives intended to make maximum impact on our campus and the Huntsville community. The economic situation of our Northwest Huntsville zip code 35896 and 35810 is significantly disadvantaged, with 33% of the residents listing no income” observed President Pollard. This grant will support: • the delivery of healthcare and related services to citizens of North Alabama; • our partnership of the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering; • the Alabama Department of Public Health’s social distancing guidelines; and • technology and infrastructure expenditures related to remote/online instruction and learning. Oakwood University is a member of the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Universities that serves 25,000 students. The Alabama Independent Colleges will receive $20,000,000. In addition, the Alabama Community College System will receive $27,345,000, and Alabama Public 4-Year Institutions will receive $25,000,000. The Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Universities President Paul Hankins said. “The additional support is greatly appreciated in this unprecedented time of financial need. These funds will go a long way to ensure our schools can remain open. Our colleges have done everything necessary to keep their students safe and on campus.” “We are grateful and give glory to God for this external funding that will help fuel the mission of Oakwood University,” said President Pollard.
