Coppin State University Partners with NAMI Baltimore to Observe Mental Health Awareness Week Oct. 4-10

Posted By: Reggie Culpepper on October 05, 2020 Coppin State University (CSU) is partnering with the National Association on Mental Illness (NAMI) of metropolitan Baltimore, to observe mental health awareness week October 4-10 and introducing a mental health app as an alternative for seeking help. “It’s well known to those who are involved with mental health counseling and treatment that one in five people live with a mental health condition. Chances are you know someone who does. They are our friends, family members, colleagues, neighbors, and classmates,” said Michelle Reynolds, CSU Center for Counseling and Student Development director. According to Christopher Thomas, CSU Center for Counseling and Student Development assistant director, “for many the stigma associated with mental illness keeps individuals from speaking up and getting the support they need to start their recovery. It’s important that we have these discussions on our college campuses because students may experience stress and anxiety while in school, especially during the coronavirus pandemic,” Thomas said. CSU has partnered with NAMI to present virtual interactive discussions. The NAMI event titled, #IWILLLISTEN will feature discussions covering a range of topics. Thomas reiterated CSU’s counseling center is always available for any students needing their service whether in-person or other ways. Students are welcome to visit screening/assessment website at: https://screening.mentalhealthscreening.or... In addition, service is now available online and via students’ cellphones. CSU partnered with META Teletherapy, the leading mental health platform for schools, to offer online counseling services to students who uncomfortable or may not want to visit the CSU counseling center in-person. META is a nationwide network of licensed and vetted mental health providers, including counselors, therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists. Students can search for the provider who best fits their individual needs, filtering by a range of factors including gender, areas of expertise, location, ethnicity, and languages spoken. Students pay for sessions using their insurance or pay out-of-pocket. Students download the META app, choose a counselor, and receive chat, video, or voice counseling through the privacy and convenience of their smartphones. The app presents available online counselors for immediate connection, or students can leave a chat or voice message to schedule a future session. By partnering with META, CSU receives a robust mental health program, complete with self-service content directed at students and an ongoing awareness campaign encouraging students to take care of their emotional and mental well-being.
