Posted By: Will Moss on October 13, 2020 By Rachael Thomas BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Former Southern University band director, Nathan Haymer, 42, has pleaded guilty to a federal embezzlement charge. Haymer’s attorney, Karl Bernard, confirmed the plea to WAFB Wednesday, Oct. 7. Haymer is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 28, 2021. According to a state audit, Haymer is accused of pocketing hundreds of thousands of dollars meant for the university’s marching band. However, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of one count of program fraud in the amount of $10,000 and $95,000. As a result of Haymer’s guilty plea, he faces significant jail time, fines, and a period of supervised release. The Department of Justice (DOJ) reports that Haymer was responsible for making purchases and paying expenses for the marching band for trips. The charges allege between November of 2016 and March of 2018, Haymer intentionally misapplied more than $30,000 provided to him by the school to be used for band expenses. The DOJ goes on to say specifically, Haymer submitted false documents such as forged invoices on more than a dozen occasions knowing he had not actually incurred the expenses reflected. “The actions of this defendant betrayed the trust of the taxpayers and tarnished the image of the Southern University Band, a beloved institution of our community. I want to thank the prosecutor, the Louisiana Legislative Auditor, the FBI, and the Louisiana State Police for their investigative efforts which resulted in this conviction," said U.S. Attorney Brandon Fremin.
