Oakwood University Crowns Miss UNCF 2020

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on October 21, 2020

On the beautiful Sunday afternoon of October 18, 2020, Samara Bowden was crowned as Oakwood University's Miss UNCF 2021 at a socially-distanced coronation event, in front of the Monument to Service Plaza. It was an inspiring celebration of female leadership, talent, and poise.

The Division of Advancement, the Office of Alumni Relations and officers of the Oakwood Pre-Alumni Council congratulate our new Miss UNCF of Oakwood University for 2020-21, who is a senior Vocal Performance and Pedagogy major with a Psychology minor.

During the Coronation ceremony, Oakwood University’s first lady Dr. Prudence LaBeach Pollard, Vice President of Quality Assurance, Research & Faculty Development, gave the
the charge to the new Miss UNCF that was both inspirational and notable. Dr. Pollard said:

“Samara, your platform is all about music. I challenge you to use your voice in song to be the voice for the voiceless, music for those who are downcast, and the plated voice echoing the concerns for the oppressed. We want you, Samara, 'beautiful girl protected by God,' to be present and to be ever present so you can hear the voice of those who you’ve chosen to represent. You will be the torch showing that every little black boy and every little black girl can be beautifully protected by God for such a time as this.

My charge to you Samara, Miss UNCF of Oakwood University, is to wear the crown of Miss UNCF knowing that your siren platform earned you the crown. Represent, represent, and represent…. Serve others with Godly love… You are now not just a student walking this historic campus, but an ambassador…”

The UNCF gives over $100 million in scholarships every year to its HBCU member institutions. A note of gratitude to all family members, Oakwood alumni, believers of the UNCF mission, home church members and friends who have already contributed to Samara’s campaign.

You can continue to support Samara by donating to her giving link which helps students receive UNCF scholarships. Our goal is to raise $38,000 or more by January 20, 2021, to place Samara in the running for the National Miss UNCF.
