Hampton University Grad, Rashida Jones, Named President of MSNBC!

Hampton University Grad, Rashida Jones, Named President of MSNBC!
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on December 09, 2020

Congratulations are in order for a Hampton University graduate that is making headlines for becoming the first Black executive to run a major general news cable network. Rashida Jones, who currently serves as the senior vice president of NBC News and MSNBC, will soon replace longtime network president Phil Griffin, who has decided to step down.

As a leader of MSNBC’s daytime and weekend programming, Jones has overseen coverage for major recent events such as the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, the two 2020 Presidential debates, and the coronavirus pandemic. This promotion to network President comes only seven years into her time at NBCUniversal News Group.

In a memo discussing the change slated to take place in February, NBCU Chairman Cesar Conde praised Jones saying she, “knows and understands MSNBC” and “she leads with laser-like focus and grace under pressure.”

This news adds to the long list of HBCU grad accomplishments this year, including Spelman graduate Stacey Abrams playing a major role in turning Georgia blue during the 2020 Presidential election, and Kamala Harris, a Howard University graduate, becoming the vice president-elect. Several Twitter users took to the platform to celebrate the news about Jones, one being Shakari Briggs, a Spectrum News journalist, who said, “Let this be another reminder of the impact of HBCUs.”
