White Student Recently Accepted into Spelman College Sparks Controversy Within the HBCU Community
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on December 09, 2020 Over the weekend, a white student recently accepted into Spelman College student took to Instagram to share her excitement of being able to attend what she calls the "home of Black Girl Magic." In her extensive post, the young lady said, "Transferring to a Historical Black College or University has been my dream for almost two years now. I could never have genuinely imagined I'd be transferring to the #1 HBCU in the country, Spelman College," she wrote in the post. "The home of Black girl magic. I feel beyond grateful for every facet of my journey & for this IMMENSE privilege...I understand the privilege I hold as a White woman in America, and I choose to wake up every day using this privilege to create a more equitable and healed world." Her post immediately blew up and became the topic of conversation within the HBCU community. Some critiqued her for choosing to attend an all-Black institution and accused her of fetishizing HBCU and Black culture, while others welcomed her with open arms. Whether she knew it or not, her post celebrating her college acceptance sparked a debate of who should attend our beloved institutions and who should not. What are your thoughts? Let us know! I do not believe Spelman is the place for her. This was very disappointing news for me.

As a Spelman graduate, we've always had white women on campus. It's out school and I do not like this vitriol. There are white students at almost every HBCU so what's with the outrage. As long as our culture doesn't change, what's the problem.
