How To Write In-app Messages That Drive Product Engagement?
Posted By: Nouman Ali on December 10, 2020

In-app messages are crucial for product engagement. Every customer engagement strategy needs to reach the users at the right time and right place consistently across multiple platforms. To get users to take the desired action, you have to motivate them. This is where in-app messages come in handy.

There are many different uses of in-app messages, such as informing, guiding, and delighting users. If you want users to continue using your app, you need to craft the perfect in-app messages. With the right in-app message, you get to persuade users to act as desired.

If you want your users to stick around, you will find this post to be extremely useful. It explores how you can design, personalize, and position messages in different ways to create a lasting relationship with users.

What Is In-App Messaging?

In the simplest of words, in-app messages are popup notifications that users receive in an attempt to engage with them to facilitate the promotion of offers, offer support, share product updates, and more.

Since in-app messages appear when users open the app, they offer an amazing opportunity for companies to boost traction. In-app messaging is essential for a cohesive marketing strategy.

Types of In-App Messages

1. Chats and Posts

Chat and posts help start a conversation with users. Companies send outbound chats and posts to welcome visitors and announce new updates. Generally, a post takes up more space and is used for promotional activity.

2. Mobile Carousels

To support customers, announce new products, share information, highlight the latest features and on-board features, mobile carousels are required. They provide a full-screen experience to users. This means that they have to provide a unique look and feel.

3. Product Tours

Finally, there are product tours that walk users through the app user interface and highlight all the features available.

How Can You Craft the Perfect In-App Messages for Driving Product Engagement?

Now that you know more about in-app messages, it is about time that we looked at how you can craft the perfect in-app messages to drive product engagement.

1. Set a Goal

The first thing that you need to do before you proceed with crafting an in-app message is to set a goal. Only send a message to users if it is necessary. It is important that you avoid bombarding users with useless messages. There should be a reason behind why you want to automate the message.

Think about why you want to send a message. Some good reasons to send an in-app message are mentioned.

  • To drive users who have signed up for over 2 weeks to try out advanced features.
  • To drive high-intent users to initiate live chat sessions.
  • To drive users to use your guide.

Set a goal to get an idea about what exactly you want to achieve with the in-app message.

2. Segment Audience Based on Goals

Another important tip that will help you craft amazing in-app messages for driving product engagement is the segmentation of your audience based on your goals. For instance, if you want to focus on Web Development Houston, you should write out the exact criteria for achieving growth.

Once you have segmented your audience based on the goals, you can craft a message that is specific to them. There are plenty of tools that you can use to segment your customers, visitors, and leads.

3. Write a Concise and Clear Message

When writing messages, you have to write as short as you can. Write a rough draft and edit it to make it shorter.

You can also ask your team for some feedback. If your colleagues are confused about the message, you can share the spreadsheet with them and remove words that do not add value.

Next, you need to focus on the messages being on-brand. Whether the brand is cheerful or professional, the message should incorporate it in its tone. Successful in-app messages have a reason. They are concisely and clearly written.

4. Provide an Easy Exit

The perfect in-app message is one that offers an easy exit. If there is no easy exit route, users will simply close the app. This is something that should be avoided at all costs. Although your efforts should be on getting users to read the message, it does not mean that you should force them to read.

Instead, there has to be an easy exit as it shows that you are confident in your in-app message and know that users will still read it.

5. Make the Message Visually Appealing

Humans are drawn to visuals. We have a preference for visuals. This is why you need to include images, videos, and other image-based content in the in-app messages to drive product engagement. Besides, nobody wants to read a black and white message.

An effective way to make the message visually appealing is by designing the message to add the color scheme and font of your brand. Many companies have started to add gifs and emojis to their in-app messages as they help spice things up and keep users entertained with minimal effort.

6. Monitor the Metrics

Once you have created the message, the quest does not stop there. You have to keep optimizing the in-app messages if you want to be successful. This is why it makes sense to pay attention to the metrics. Not only should you check how many users receive the message, but also how they act upon it.

Metrics provide you with valuable insights. You can learn from them to continuously craft the most effective in-app messages that offer the best results. It does not get better than this.

7. Use Rules for Targeting Messages

As there are different segments in your target audience, you need to target the in-app messages accordingly. Rules can be set up to cater to different audiences. For instance, you can set up different rules for users that regularly use the app and those that have not used it for over a month.

8. Test

Finally, you have to test new things if you want users to take an interest in your product. The same in-app messages would only bore users and result in them deleting the app. Therefore, you have to test, test, and test more new things.

Keep track of all the different tests performed to learn more about your target audience. You can use this knowledge to perfect the in-app messages. You can even integrate the messages depending on their performance.

By regularly testing the in-app messages, you will keep users hooked. It is a sure way to boost product engagement.

Why Is In-App Messaging Important?

As most people tend to use smartphones today, every company needs to have an app that is dedicated to serving customers. With in-app messaging, it is possible to make the most of smartphone technology. You can leverage it to influence audience behavior and more.

The following reasons highlight why in-app messaging is important.

  • Help retain users in the long run.
  • Convert visitors and get them to use the premium version of the app.
  • Onboard new users.
  • Promote the latest paid features.
  • Generate user feedback.

Drive Product Engagement with the Best In-App Messages

In-app messages are the next best thing. Companies can use them to achieve a variety of objectives. Take advantage of the tips mentioned above to craft in-app messages that drive unprecedented product engagement. Each tip goes a long way in helping you maximize engagement.
