Columbus Man, Casey Goodson Jr., Murdered by Sheriff While Trying to Enter His Own Home

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on December 10, 2020 The Department of Justice recently announced that it would be investigating the murder of a Black man shot and killed as he was entering his home last Friday. According to the Franklin County Coroner's Office, Casey Goodson Jr., 23, was shot multiple times in the back. Goodson was returning from a dentist appointment when a white Deputy Sheriff, Jason Meade, shot him several times as he was going to unlock the door. Meade, a 17- year veteran of the sheriff's office, claimed that the day of the shooting, he confronted Goodson after Goodson drove past the deputy and waved a gun at him. Meade claimed that he ordered Goodson to drop the weapon as he exited his vehicle, but Goodson refused. While Goodson was carrying a legal handgun at the time of his death, the Columbus Division of Police, currently investigating the shooting, says that no other officers witnessed the shooting. There is no camera footage of the alleged confrontation to confirm Meade's story. Goodson's sister, Kaylee Harper, disputed those claims on Facebook, writing, "My brother literally walked across the yard, walked into the back fence to get to the side door, had his Subway and mask in one hand, keys in the other, UNLOCKED AND OPENED THE DOOR, and stepped in the house before shooting him, "IF HE WAS SUCH A THREAT, WHY DID YOU WAIT SO LONG TO SHOOT?" The U.S Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, David M. DeVillers, said in a statement, "After being briefed about the circumstances surrounding the incident by CPD, I believe a federal investigation is warranted. I have contacted the FBI and have requested that they work in conjunction with CPD to investigate this case through our office." Goodson's mother, Tamala Payne, told CNN that her son was a law-abiding citizen who "would not have harmed a fly…. The kid had a whole life ahead of him. He had plans, dreams, he had goals, and they were ripped from him for nothing." If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
