Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Turns Down Biden Cabinet Position
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on December 15, 2020 President-Elect Joe Biden has been in the process of selecting cabinet members over the past few weeks, and while the public usually only gets to hear about the people who accepted the position, advisors to Atlanta Mayor and FAMU grad, Keisha Lance Bottoms, confirmed that Bottoms turned down a cabinet position offer. In a statement to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the mayor’s senior advisor Rashad Taylor said, “Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was honored to have been offered a role in the Cabinet, which she respectfully declined. The Mayor’s focus remains on the people of Atlanta and the great state of Georgia.” Taylor made it clear that the Mayor, nor her team, would not be disclosing specifics on the offer by saying, “Out of respect for the process, and the other candidates under consideration, no additional comment will be forthcoming on this matter at this time.” Bottom’s name was thrown around quite a bit this year when it came to this year’s presidential election. Earlier in the year, the mayor’s name was mentioned in conversations regarding potential running mates for Joe Biden, but the VP spot ultimately went to Howard grad, Kamala Harris. More recently, many suspected that Bottoms would be selected to lead the Housing and Urban Development department, but that rumor was dispelled last week when Biden named Rep. Marcia L. Fudge as the new HUD secretary. It was also speculated that Bottoms was offered the position of U.S ambassador to the Bahamas, but Taylor clarified by saying that the mayor was “never offered an ambassadorship.” This news leads us to believe that Bottoms still has work to do in her city of Atlanta and is planning on running for re-election come 2021.
