Illuminating The Light For Aspiring Black Coaches.....

Posted By: Kim Muhammad on December 16, 2020 Where do I start, let’s see if I can create a picture out of this blank canvas of sports journalism. I am definitely a late bloomer when it comes to this whole writing thing. I found some thing I really enjoy doing! Commitment to excellences is an understatement. This blank canvas must be painted in a way that gives clarity to our culture as a people. I have decided to highlight some of the best Collegiate Black Basketball coaches in the country. This picture will not be painted overnight it will be done in stages. Performance to detail is a quality that is needed when creating a masterpiece! There is a saying that goes “Power without heart is meaningless.” Prominent black coaches such as John Thompson, Nolan Richardson, John Chaney, and George Raveling used to advocate for opportunities for black coaches. These men were the heartbeat of class, character, and integrity in there respected line of work. I am quite sure many young black high school coaches, and some collegiate coaches don’t have a clue who broke the color barrier when it comes to Division I coaching. Williams J. Robinson born June 3, 1911 in Wadesboro, North Carolina was an American College basketball coach and scout. Robinson became the first Black head coach in NCAA Division I history when he accepted the position at Illinois State University in 1970. The year I was born!! He is the yardstick by which things are measured! There are definitely a lot of quality coaches who grace the hardwood floor in this era. Here are a few, who I really enjoy watching on the sideline: Head Coach LeVelle Moton Head Coach LeVelle Moton played College basketball at the University of North Carolina Central. His head coaching career started in 2009. He’s been to four NCAA tournaments and one NIT tournament. Coach Moton is a 3x MEAC regular season champ (2014, 2015, 2017) A 4x MEAC tournament champ (2014, 2017–2019). He also was named MEAC Coach of the Year in 2017. Head Coach Earl Grant Coach Earl Grant played College basketball for Division II George college located in Milledgeville, Georgia. His coaching career started in 2002 as an assistant coach. Coach Grant became a head coach in 2014 for College of Charleston. He’s been to one NCAA Tournament and one NIT Tournament. In 2018 coach Grant, won the CAA Regular season and Tournament championship. He also was named CAA Coach of the Year in 2017. Head Coach LaVall Jordan Head Coach LaVall Jordan is definitely one of the rising stars in college coaching. Coach LaVall played College basketball at Butler University. He helped lead Butler to three tournament titles and two regular-season championships. His coaching career started at the young age of 24, and for the next 14 years he would be an assistant coach. Coach LaVall spent one season as head coach at Wisconsin Milwaukee, before becoming the head coach at Butler University. He’s been to two NCAA Tournament and one NIT Tournament. Head Coach Ed Cooley Head Coach Ed Cooley played College basketball at Division II Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. Cooley was a three-year team captain at Stonehill, and was named to the Northeast-10 Conference academic honor roll. His coaching career started in 1994-95 at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. For nine more seasons coach Cooley was an assists coach. He earned his first Head coaching position at Fairfield University in 2006. On March 22, 2011 he became the head coach of Providence University. In nine years coach Cooley has compiled a record of 277 wins and 193 losses. He also has won one MAAC regular season championship, and one Big East championship. He has been named Coach of the Year twice. Coach Cooley as appeared in the NCAA 7 times, and the NIT 6 times. Head Coach Leonard Hamilton When we talk about Peak performance Leonard Hamilton’s name is at the forefront. He has been a standard bearer for many years now. If young coaches are looking for an example coach Hamilton represents all the qualities of what an example looks like! Coach Hamilton was the head coach at Oklahoma State, Miami University, Washington Wizards, and he’s currently at Florida State. Coach Leonard Hamilton was born August 4, 1948 in Gastonia, North Carolina. He played College basketball at Gaston Community College in Dallas, North Carolina. He also played at The University of Tennessee at Martin. Coach Hamilton’s coaching career started as an assistant from 1971-74 at Austin Peay. He also was an assistant at the University of Kentucky for the next 8 years. Coach Hamilton has been a head coach for 34 years compiling a record of 579-431. He’s won a Big East regular championship, ACC regular championship. He’s also won a ACC Tournament championship. Coach Hamilton has been Coach of the Year multiple times; UPI National Coach of the Year, 2x Big East Coach of the Year, 3x ACC Coach of the Year.
