XULA Men's Basketball Team Remains in NAIA Top 25
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on December 16, 2020 Xavier University of Louisiana, winner of two of its first three games this season, moved from 20th to 23rd Wednesday in the NAIA men's basketball coaches poll. It's the first time since 2015-16 that the XULA men are in the top 25 in each of the first two polls of a season. It's XULA's ninth consecutive top-25 appearance, its longest streak since 55 consecutive polls from Dec. 12, 2011-Jan. 26, 2016. XULA has not played since a 91-80 loss Nov. 7 at city rival Loyola — the Wolf Pack climbed from 16th to ninth in the NAIA rankings — and XULA will resume its schedule in early January. XULA opened the season with a pair of home victories: 79-58 against Southeastern Baptist on Oct. 21 and 76-63 against William Carey on Nov. 2. Indiana Wesleyan — 13-0 and the NAIA leader in victories this season — received 18-of-21 first-place votes to climb from third to No. 1 in the poll. The Wildcats replaced Georgetown (Ky.), which fell to sixth. XULA is one of two Gulf Coast Athletic Conference teams in the top 25. Talladega (8-1) is No. 17, its highest ranking since 13th on Nov. 27, 2019. GCAC and city rival Dillard is among "others receiving votes" for the seventh consecutive time and in 41st place. Forty-six teams received votes. 2020-21 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll (first-place votes in parentheses — records through Dec. 13) Rank Team Record Points Last 1 Indiana Wesleyan (18) 13-0 589 3 2 William Penn (2) 10-0 569 4 3 Mid-America Christian (1) 4-0 537 2 4 LSU-Shreveport 8-0 534 6 5 Arizona Christian 6-0 504 9 6 Georgetown (Ky.) 5-1 498 1 7 Lewis-Clark State 2-0 494 5 8 Morningside 10-1 437 7 9 Loyola (N.O.) 4-0 405 16 10 Marian (Ind.) 5-1 404 12 11 Cumberlands 7-1 396 15 12 The Master's 4-0 350 19 13 John Brown 0-0 341 10 14 Providence (Mont.) 0-0 322 11 15 College of Idaho 1-3 312 8 16 Faulkner 8-0 311 RV 17 Talladega 8-1 241 RV 18 Dakota Wesleyan 9-1 236 NR 19 LSU-Alexandria 7-2 216 13 20 Saint Francis (Ind.) 6-1 182 RV 21 Texas A&M-Texarkana 5-0 164 NR 22 SAGU 1-0 161 22 23 XULA 2-1 115 20 24 Martin Methodist 6-1 114 NR 25 Bethel (Kan.) 9-3 109 NR Dropped from rankings: No. 14 Ottawa (Kan.), No. 17 Olivet Nazarene, No. 18 Dalton State, No. 21 Carroll (Mont.), No. 23 Oregon Tech, 24 Union (Ky.), No. 25 Antelope Valley Others receiving votes: Southeastern (Fla.) 96, Oregon Tech 89, Oklahoma Wesleyan 83, Benedictine (Kan.) 82, Carroll (Mont.) 76, Indiana Tech 60, Antelope Valley 56, Freed-Hardeman 56, Westmont 45, Bethel (Ind.) 30, Texas Wesleyan 28, Central Baptist 27, Union (Ky.) 15, Holy Cross (Ind.) 14, Valley City State 10, Dillard 9, Dalton State 7, Northwestern (Iowa) 6, Science & Arts 4, Evangel 3, Cornerstone 3 If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
