Hampton University President Set to Retire After Four-Decades
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on December 21, 2020 Last week, Hampton University announced that after serving for more than four decades, President William R. Harvey plans to retire in June of 2022. Harvey is Hampton’s 12th president and holds the record for one of the longest tenures of any college or university sitting president. A native of Brewton, Alabama, and a graduate of Talladega College and Harvard University, Harvey began his role in 1978 and has played a major role in Hampton becoming the institution it is today. Since his inauguration, Harvey has contributed to the increase in the growth and quality of the institution’s academic programs, facilities, student enrollment, and financial stability. In a recent statement, Wesley Coleman, chairman of the university’s board of trustees, spoke about Harvey’s impact saying, “[the] growth and development that I have witnessed under Dr. Harvey’s successful leadership have been, in a word, triumphant. The significance of this president’s legendary contributions to Hampton will be celebrated for generations.” We celebrate Harvey’s contributions to Hampton, and his legacy will forever be celebrated in the HBCU community.
