Posted By: Kennedy Williams on December 22, 2020 According to a new class-action suit, former HBCU athletes are suing the NCAA on the basis of discrimination. The athletes are alleging that the Academics Performance Plan, a program put in place to measure student-athletes’ academic progress and performance and enforce penalties for those who do not meet a certain standard, was designed to discriminate against Black athletes at HBCUs intentionally. In a 58-page lawsuit, the athletes specifically site post-season bans and claim that even though HBCUs make up less than 7 percent of Division I athletics, more than 72 percent of post-season penalties have been given out to those who attend Black schools. Several former athletes like J’Ta Freeman, Howard women’s lacrosse player, and Troyce Manassa and Austin Dasent, Savannah State basketball players, are listed as plaintiffs for this case. Each of them goes into detail and describes how the penalties for academic performance kept them from participating in their respective post-season games. The lead attorney on the case, Beth Fegan, told the Associated Press that the NCAA has created an unjust playing field that negatively affects Black athletes and the schools they play for. “The NCAA should be supporting the mission of HBCUs, not penalizing them for it.” View the full complaint here If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
