Georgia’s Jon Ossoff Wants to Help HBCU Students Graduate Debt Free!

Georgia’s Jon Ossoff Wants to Help HBCU Students Graduate Debt Free!
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on December 28, 2020

Lately, there have been several politicians making HBCUs related issues a part of their platform. President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect (and Howard grad) Kamala Harris have been very vocal about their plans to increase funding to HBCUs and assist HBCU attendees with paying back student loans. Georgia contender for U.S Senate, Jon Ossoff, has joined the ranks and is making it known that he wants HBCU students to be able to graduate debt-free.

Ossoff is just days away from a critical GA runoff election against incumbent David Perdue. This election, along with the race between Morehouse grad Raphael Warnock and incumbent Kelly Loeffler, will ultimately determine which party holds the power in the Senate for the next four years.

The Atlanta native told Rolling Out in an interview, “We can make four-year degrees at public colleges and HBCUs debt-free by expanding the Pell Grant program, and we can relieve the burden of student loan debt for so many young people. I will offer legislation to expand the Pell Grant program, so no American has to take on a penny of debt to get a degree from an HBCU or a public college, period.”

Ossoff did not stop with the issue of student loan debt. He also spoke about how he plans to support historically Black institutions if elected in January. In the same interview, he said, “I will help direct additional federal resources to HBCUs to upgrade facilities, expand programs in critical fields like medicine and nursing, science and engineering, and education to increase Black representation in those fields.”

While we can appreciate the fact that there has been an increase in discussions about helping our beloved institutions, we are looking forward to all of these things being put into action in the upcoming years.
