Lincoln University Becomes First HBCU with Its Own Police Academy
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on December 29, 2020 It is no secret that, historically, there has always been tension between police officers and the Black community. That tension was highlighted this year amid several cases of police shootings and police brutality spanning all across the country. Many believe that the lack of diversity within the force often contributes to the mistrust of those who take the oath to protect and serve, especially in predominantly Black communities. Missouri HBCU Lincoln University is making an effort to change that reality. Missouri Governor Mike Parson just signed off on granting Lincoln University a basic training center license, making the HBCU the first of its kind to have a police academy. Created with the hopes of increasing the diversity of the police force, the academy will be directed by Lincoln’s current police chief, Gary Hill, and will begin operating next year. When asked about his motivation behind pushing for the academy, Hill said, When I went through the academy, I was one of two African Americans, and for us to have an academy here focused on increasing the diversity in law enforcement so people can feel included is incredible. “Now the real work begins. We have to ensure that when we have people enrolled in the academy that we’re giving them all the tools that they need to succeed today and in the future.” If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
