HBCU Grad (Morgan State University), Yogananda Pittman Named Acting Chief of Capitol Police in Wake of Capitol Riot

HBCU Grad (Morgan State University), Yogananda Pittman Named Acting Chief of Capitol Police in Wake of Capitol Riot
Posted By: Will Moss on January 11, 2021

A Black woman, Yogananda Pittman, graduate of Morgan State University, has been named named acting Chief Of Capitol Police.

Message from Morgan State:

Dear Morgan Community,

In the wake of this past week’s horrendous and thwarted attack on the U.S. Capitol, I am pleased to announce that a decision was made to elevate distinguished and decorated Morgan alumna Yogananda D. Pittman to serve in the role as acting chief of the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP). This appointment is notable for our nation and our University, as she will be the first woman and first African American to hold the post of leading the USCP. We commend this wise decision as it is widely known that Morgan graduates are purposefully prepared to not only Grow the Future, but to Lead the World.

Acting Chief Pittman, who graduated from Morgan in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology, previously served in the capacity as assistant chief of police for Protective and Intelligence Operations and will continue with these duties. As the acting chief of police, she will be responsible for administering the Department in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, and ensuring that organizational objectives are met, including the protection of the U.S. Capitol. She replaces the outgoing chief, Steven A. Sund, who announced his resignation following the tragic events of January 6.

I implore Morgan graduates and members of the Morgan family around the world to join me in a full show of support. Together, we celebrate this recognition of leadership and congratulate one of our own, Acting Chief Yogananda D. Pittman, on her achievement. She is undeniably Morgan Made!

Respectfully,

David Wilson, President.

I hope this is a step forward, as many in the force have expressed disappointment in their leadership.

Good luck to her. And us.
