Howard’s Very Own Showtime Marching Band Set To Escort Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris to the Inauguration

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on January 19, 2021

Well, family, the time has finally come. Around this time tomorrow, HBCU graduate Kamala Harris will be sworn in as the first woman and first African American Vice President of the United States. Ahead of her arrival at the historical ceremony, the Howard grad will be ushered into the sweet cadence of Howard University’s Showtime Marching Band.

In a statement about the once in a lifetime opportunity, Howard President Wayne A. I. Frederick said, “It is our esteemed honor to be involved in the historic inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Throughout her career, the vice president-elect has carried her Howard education with her, ensuring that she adheres to truth and service and inspiring her to achieve unprecedented levels of excellence.”

Due to the threat of the global pandemic and out of an abundance of caution, only one-third of the band will be participating in the Inauguration parade, including Showtime’s drumline, the Flashy Flag Squad, and the Ooh La La dancers.

Kelvin Washington, the Howard University Band Director who has been preparing the “perfect song” for the event since Harris joined the Presidential ticket back in August, expressed his excitement about the event saying, “We are proud to unite safely as a band to represent Howard University, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and all HBCUs across the country. It's a very gracious opportunity for us, and we’re very thankful for it.”

Harris’ journey from Howard to the White House has been incredible to watch and serves as a prime example of just how valuable an HBCU education is. Howard alum and students, along with HBCU grads all over the country, are so excited to see what the future holds for Madam Vice President.

“It is perfectly fitting that the Showtime Marching Band, the ensemble that captures and reverberates the heartbeat of our institution, should accompany her on this last leg of her journey to the White House,” said President Frederick. “It was that steady pulse of her Alma Mater’s legacy that propelled her forward, and it is that same rhythm that will carry her onward as she undoubtedly will become one of the most influential vice presidents in the history of our nation.”
