Show Me The TUBMANS: Move Over Andrew Jackson, Harriet Tubman is Coming to the $20 Bill
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on January 26, 2021 Do y’all remember back in 2016 when everyone was talking about abolitionist Harriet Tubman possibly replacing slave owner Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill? Well, it’s been about 5 years, BUT it looks like this might finally become a reality. The Biden Administration recently announced that it will be moving forward with efforts to put the change in motion and redesign the bill to feature Tubman. Biden’s press secretary Jen Psaki said in a press conference that it’s crucial that, “our money ... reflect the history and diversity of our country, and Harriet Tubman's image gracing the new $20 note would certainly reflect that. So we're exploring ways to speed up that effort.” Initially presented under the Obama administration, the then-Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew announced back in 2016 that a new design on the $20 bill would feature a portrait of Tubman on the front and display Jackson on the back. The bill was supposed to be unveiled in the year 2020, but with all of the craziness that came with the Trump administration, that effort fizzled out and died. President Biden and his administration seem to feel that commemorating an important American hero like Tubman is worth the effort of changing the face of our currency, so we will see what happens. Would y’all be excited to see Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill? Do you think Jackson should remain on the bill or be removed altogether? Who else should be added/removed from US dollar bills?
