Two Atlanta Police Officers Who Were Fired For Assaulting and Tasing HBCU Students Have Been Reinstated
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on February 03, 2021 Last summer, during a protest following George Floyd’s death, two HBCU students, one Spelman College student and one Morehouse College student were forcefully pulled from their car, thrown to the ground, tased, and ultimately arrested by a group of Atlanta police officers. Following the incident, Atlanta Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms fired the two officers who physically assaulted the students, saying, “There clearly was excessive use of force. We understand that our officers are working very long hours under an enormous amount of stress, but we also understand that the use of excessive force is never acceptable.” Well apparently what was unacceptable last summer, is totally acceptable now because those two officers were reinstated earlier this week. According to Essence, the Atlanta Civil Service Board ruled in favor of Officers Mark Gardner and Ivory Streeter, which not only allows for them to be reinstated but also calls for them to collect back pay. The board argues that the city of Atlanta “did not follow the personnel regulations of the Atlanta Code of Ordinances in the dismissal” and that is why they believe Gardner and Streeter, both who are Black, deserve to get their jobs back, despite their unacceptable behavior. Essence also reports that even though the officers have gotten their jobs back, there is still currently a criminal case pending against both of them.
