FVSU Professor Accused of Trivializing The Death of Trayvon Martin with ‘Hoodie’ and ‘Skittles’ Joke During Class
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on February 17, 2021 A professor at Fort Valley State University is under fire after a student tweeted about a joke she made during class. On Tuesday, an FVSU student identified as Janei Dortilus, took to Twitter to recall a conversation that occurred between her professor and a male student and said, “My professor just said ‘Take your hoodie off… you’re not going for skittles and sweet tea.’… I’m speechless.” The comment struck a nerve in not only the student who tweeted about it but to everyone else who read it. The mention of a hoodie and Skittles was a clear allusion to Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old who was brutally murdered by a neighborhood watch volunteer while walking home from the store. When Martin was killed, he was wearing a Black hoodie and carrying Skittles and iced tea. The tweet immediately went viral and hundreds of thousands of people began expressing their disgust with the “joke”. Many encouraged the student to report the professor for her inappropriate comment, which Dortilus eventually did. A FVSU spokesperson told NewsOne that the school would conduct “a thorough investigation” on the matter. “We take our students’ experience very seriously and want to promote the highest level of student success in a positive environment.” If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
