Why have African-Americans and communities of color been harder hit by the COVID-19 Pandemic? This is the result of decades of systemic racism that had placed us behind when it comes to income, education, health status, where we live and more. Decades of not being allowed to buy homes in certain communities, decades of being denied loans, problems with health care received and often being treated differently and not listened to. People of color have more chronic conditions, less access to care and even with access are often not provided the same level of care.

How do you communicate with family and friends who have reservations? It will take you acknowledging up front the issues in the past. Yes, we have not been treated fairly. Bad things have occurred including the horror of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. You will have to believe that the vaccine is safe before you can get anyone else to understand this. For now, let me share how I do it. My message to all that I speak with is this; “I am totally confident that this vaccine is safe. I am not concerned about “how fast” these were made because I know how this was done. A lot of money was given up front to companies by the federal government to allow many steps to occur at once, instead of doing them sequentially and none of the safety steps were skipped. I have taken both doses of the Pfizer vaccine. My husband has taken both doses.

What vaccine is better? The vaccine you can get the earliest. All three currently available, will prevent severe disease. I have told family and friends to take any vaccine that is currently available as soon as they are eligible. My baby sister who is a colon cancer survivor has taken the vaccine. If I had any doubts about this vaccine, I would certainly not have taken it and I certainly would not ask my family and friends to take it. I tell them to ignore the fiction and focus on the facts! The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines do not contain “live virus” and can not give you COVID-19. The vaccines do not contain animal products! They do not contain fetal remnants! There is no chip being inserted in you when you take the shot! They do not contain heavy metals! Yes, they will keep the majority of persons who take them from getting COVID-19. Yes, some people who take them will still get COVID-19 but persons in the studies all had milder cases and were not hospitalized. Vaccination against COVID-19 will only work if most of us take the vaccines. GET VACCINATED!!!“
