XULA Athletics teams went 7-0 Friday, March 12, 2021!

Men's Basketball: Makye Richard scored 25 points -- his most in 37 games with the program -- to lead XULA to a 67-59 victory against 25th-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) in the opening round of NAIA nationals at Alexandria, La. XULA (14-4) will play eighth-ranked SAGU (10-2) -- Southwestern Assemblies of God (Waxahachie, Texas) -- in the round of 32 at 3 p.m. Saturday at Alexandria's Rapides Parish Coliseum. The winner will advance to the round of 16 next week at Kansas City, Mo.

Women's Basketball: Da'Jha Virgil scored 17 points and Nia Bishop 15 to lead XULA to a 58-45 victory against Benedictine (Kan.) in the opening round of NAIA nationals at Lakeland, Fla. XULA (13-6) improved its season-best win streak to seven and will play the host, 10th-ranked Southeastern, in the round of 32 at 7:30 p.m. EST Saturday. The winner will advance to the round of 16 next week at Sioux City, Iowa. Southeastern is 25-2 and has a 24-game win streak.

Competitive Cheer: XULA's second-year team, competing at NAIA nationals for the first time, was in sixth place out of 11 schools after Friday's preliminary round at Davenport, Iowa. The Gold's score was 83.83. The leaders are Oklahoma City (90.25), Saint Ambrose (90.13), Indiana Wesleyan (88.62) and Missouri Valley (88.62). Finals will be Saturday.

Baseball: XULA didn't hit a home run in its first eight games, but hit three Friday in game No.



9, a 17-10 victory against Tougaloo at Wesley Barrow Stadium. Catcher Tristan Rodriguez homered twice -- including a first-inning grand slam -- and Danny Coleman hit a two-run homer. Rodriguez also doubled and finished with five RBIs. Jose Fulgencio reached base safely four times and had three RBIs. XULA (6-3) and Tougaloo (2-6) will conclude their three-game series with a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader at Barrow.

Volleyball: XULA extended to 47 its win streak in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular-season matches after defeating Philander Smith and Rust at Holly Springs, Miss. XULA beat Philander Smith 25-19, 25-15, 25-18, then cruised past Rust 25-13, 25-4, 25-6. XULA (10-4, 6-0) will play twice Saturday at Rust's McMillan Multi-Purpose Center: 11 a.m. against Rust and 1 p.m. against Philander Smith.

Men's Tennis: XULA defeated Lewis-Clark State 6-1 in a matchup of ranked NAIA teams. XULA is No. 10, and Lewis-Clark State is No. 24. Freshman Jered Wilson earned his second clinch of the week when he defeated Andy Wu 6-2, 6-1 on the fifth singles court. Shaikh Abdullah and Sebastian Perez won in doubles and singles for XULA (3-4), winner of its last 15 dual matches at home.

Women's Tennis: XULA, ranked third in the NAIA, improved to 6-2 with a 6-1 victory against Lewis-Clark State. Angela Charles-Alfred, Valentina Largacha, Angelica De Vincenzis, Kyra Akinnibi and Farah Baklouti won in doubles and singles. Baklouti clinched at No. 4 singles with her 6-2, 6-0 victory against Sophie Uhlenkott. XULA has won its last 10 dual matches at home.
