Say What Now?: After Nearly 77 Years, United Negro College Fund Elects First Black Chair of Its Board of Directors
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on March 19, 2021 The UNCF recently announced the election of the FIRST-EVER African American chairman of the board. Yes, you read that correctly. The United Negro College Fund has never had a Black chairman on its board… until now. In an official press release earlier this week, UNCF congratulating Atlanta business and civic leader, Milton C. Jones, for becoming the first African American to become the Chair of the Board of Directors. In the press release, UNCF recalls the leadership and contribution of William F. Stasior, Sr., a white man who held the position as chairman of the board for the past 11 years, and all the other chairman that came before him, who just happen to all be white men as well. It is shocking to find out that the board of an organization that is so prominent in aiding and supporting Black students had never been under the leadership of a Black person until 2021, 77 years after being founded. "Since 1944, UNCF has played an integral role in changing the life trajectory for each student it has served, and l look forward to continuing that legacy," said Milton Jones. "Our member institutions and students remain the focus of our collective efforts. As we progress each year, we will grow our organization by building upon the strong foundation laid at UNCF's inception and strengthened throughout its history." While we congratulate Jones for this major accomplishment, we can’t help be wonder why it has taken so long for a Black person to be elected as the Chairperson of a Black-centered organization. How do you feel about Milton Jones becoming the very first Black person to lead the UNCF Board of Directors? Let us know in the comments!
