NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley Donates Money To Help HBCU Grads Pursue A Graduate Degree At His Alma Mater Auburn

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on March 22, 2021 Through his namesake foundation, Charles Barkley is giving money to his former institution to attract more HBCU graduates. The basketball superstar is no stranger to supporting HBCUs. With a track record of donating money to schools like Alabama A&M, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Miles College, and Tuskegee University, Barkley has made a consistent effort to show love to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. When discussing why Barkley continues to contribute financially to these institutions, even though he did not attend one himself, Barkley told CNN back in 2020, “I just think what it’s costing these kids to go to college today is a travesty in this country, and I know historically black colleges are struggling. I wanted to do something to help them, and I’m going to continue to help them.” According to an Auburn University press release, The Charles Barkley Foundation’s aim is to build bonds between HBCUs and the major programs of large universities to attract students from HBCUs to pursue their graduate degrees at Auburn. With these funds, the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences has established the Charles Barkley Foundation Fellowship. The amount of the fellowship is undisclosed, but it will give preference to qualifying students who have graduated with an undergraduate degree from an HBCU. Other factors for selection include applicants’ socioeconomic background and whether they grew up in a highly rural or under-served area. We commend Mr. Barkley for his continuous support for our beloved institutions and for helping HBCU graduates pursue higher education.
