The AFL-CIO is a democratic, voluntary federation of 55 national and international labor unions that represent 12.5 million working men and women. They strive to ensure all working people are treated fairly, with decent paychecks and benefits, safe jobs, dignity, and equal opportunities. This organization helps people acquire valuable skills and job-readiness for the 21st-century economy. In fact, they operate the largest training network outside the U.S. military. Anchored in making sure everyone who works for a living has family-supporting wages and benefits and the ability to retire with dignity, AFL-CIO works to advance legislation to create good jobs by investing tax dollars in schools, roads, bridges, ports and airports, and improving the lives of workers through education, job training, and a livable minimum wage. The Policy Specialist for the Labor Energy Partnership (LEP) is responsible for leading the development of LEP policy positions on energy and climate issues, working with LEP partner Energy Future Initiative to coordinate affiliate participation and input in policy development, developing strategies for achieving policy outcomes, involving affiliated unions fully in those strategies, representing the federation and the labor movement in a variety of forums, and organizing support among other organizations for LEP-developed policies. The person in this position is also responsible for conducting research and analysis on matters related to energy and climate policy, energy employment, the clean energy sector, trade-in clean energy goods, and U.S. manufacturing of energy goods. Qualifications & Requirements • Bachelor's or advanced degree in economics, political science, management, or fields related to energy and climate; relevant work experience. • Labor experience in energy or manufacturing union preferred but not required. • At least seven years of versatile and progressively responsible experience in climate or energy policy and workplace areas described above. • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts to a variety of audiences, including excellent writing, representational, and public communication skills. • Demonstrated ability to design, conduct and/or oversee independent energy and climate research and writing projects. Excellent writing and editing skills, proficiency in secondary research, ability to prepare graphs and charts. Excel and PowerPoint required.
