Spelman Alumna, Stacey Abrams Receives the NAACP’s First-Ever Social Justice Award
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on March 29, 2021 Congratulations are in order for voting rights activist and Spelman graduate Stacey Abrams after she was presented with the NAACP’s first-ever Social Justice Award this weekend. Abrams’ efforts in the fight for equal and fair voting rights has been a hot topic of conversation, especially after the last Presidential election season, where her leadership helped flip the historically red state of Georgia blue, giving Joe Biden and Kamala Harris the electoral votes they needed to take office. But the momentum didn’t stop there. Through her voting rights organization, Fair Fight, Abrams helped break voter turnout records again during the U.S. Senate runoffs in Georgia that led to the election of Morehouse graduate Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff and put the power of the Senate in the hands of Democrats. The inaugural award was presented to Stacey by our forever First Lady Michelle Obama. In her acceptance speech, Stacey thanked her parents for teaching her and her siblings to see the challenges in our world as opportunities to act,” a task that Abrams has no doubt mastered. She continued saying, “They taught me and my five siblings that having nothing was not an excuse for doing nothing. Instead, they showed us by word and deed to use our face as a shield, to protect the defenseless, to use our voices, to call out injustice, and to use our education and our time to solve the problems that others turned away from.” We congratulate Stacey for all of her accolades and recognition for her hard work and thank her for her continued effort to fight for the rights of our people. We are so proud to say that she is a product of our beloved institutions! If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
