BREAKING NEWS: HBCU, Tennessee State University to Land Former NFL Star Running Back Eddie George as Incoming Head Coach!

BREAKING NEWS: HBCU, Tennessee State University to Land Former NFL Star Running Back Eddie George as Incoming Head Coach!

Another football legend has landed a college head coaching job.

According to multiple reports, longtime NFL running back Eddie George is set to become the head coach at Tennessee State.

According to The Tennessean, current Tennessee State coach Rod Reed told his team Saturday night that TSU’s game against Southeast Missouri on Sunday would be his last at the school. Reed has been at TSU for the last 11 seasons and has a 58-60 record. TSU had a 2-4 record entering Sunday’s game, the last game of the program’s spring schedule.

Brett McMurphy of Stadium first reported the news of George’s impending hire.

George won the Heisman Trophy as a senior at Ohio State in 1995 before embarking on a nine-year pro career, almost all with the Tennessee Titans.

A first-round pick in 1996, George spent eight years with the Titans before one final go-around with the Dallas Cowboys in 2004. Overall, George rushed for 10,441 yards and 68 touchdowns in his NFL career. He also posted 268 receptions for 2,227 yards and 10 scores while earning four Pro Bowl nods.

For his efforts at Ohio State (3,768 yards and 44 TDs), George, now 47 years old, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

Since his retirement, George has worked as an actor and taken on an array of business ventures. George, however, does not have coaching experience. Tennessee State is following a similar path taken by Jackson State, which hired NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders to help revitalize its program.

Tennessee State is located in Nashville, where George has lived since concluding his NFL career. The Tigers have had a losing record the past three seasons, including a 3-9 mark in 2019.
