Civil Unrest Erupts After 20-Year- Old Daunte Wright is Murdered By Minnesota Police

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on April 12, 2021 Amid the Derek Chauvin Murder trial taking place in Minneapolis right now, civil unrest has once again broken out in Minnesota, just miles from where George Floyd was murdered by a police officer. 20-year-old Daunte Wright was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minneapolis on Sunday. According to the New York Times, Wright was pulled over by officers for a traffic violation, but it was later discovered that he had outstanding warrants. Wright's mother, Katie Wright, said that her son called her as he was being pulled over and she told him to give the phone to the officer so she could share the car insurance information. When the officers tried to detain Wright, he got back in the car and that is when he was shot. Ms. Wright told ABC KSTP-TV 5 "I heard scuffling, and I heard the police officers say, ‘Daunte, don’t run,’ and then the other officer said, ‘Put the phone down' and hung it up. And a minute later, I called and his girlfriend answered—that was the passenger—and said that he’d been shot, and she put it on the driver’s side and my son was laying there lifeless." During a press conference today, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon showed the bodycam footage in which the officer that killed Wright is heard yelling, "Taser, taser, taser!" while holding her gun. After playing the video, Gannon called the shooting an "accidental discharge." He did not, however, say whether or not the officer would be fired for killing Wright. The officer is currently on administrative leave. Following the shooting on Sunday, several protesters hit the streets outside of the Brooklyn Center Police Department demanding justice for Daunte. Due to civil unrest, a curfew was enforced on the city. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
