Does President Biden Have The Black Community's Back Like He Said He Does? Dr. Umar Johnson Doesn't Think So. Here's Why.
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on April 29, 2021 President Joe Biden has officially reached his first 100 days in office and a lot of us are just happy to have a level-headed, competent adult in the Oval office. As U.S citizens discuss all that Biden has been able to accomplish in before reaching this milestone, many people are calling him out for promises he has yet to keep. Black thought leader Dr. Umar Johnson was recently interviewed on "The Breakfast Club" radio show and expressed his feelings about what Biden has (and hasn't) done. In the interview, Dr. Umar called out Biden for neglecting to keep his promises to the Black community. Throughout Biden's campaign journey, he repeatedly made it clear that if he became President of the United States, he would be committed to making sure that the Black community was supported and taken care of. He made several promises related to voting rights, criminal justice, housing, and education designed to benefit people of color. He also promised to look into reparations for African Americans (though he did not commit to paying for it). Biden told civil rights groups and the Black community that racial justice was going to be part of everything he does, not just one or two issues on the side. During his victory speech after election results had been tabulated, Biden even said, "And especially those moments when this campaign was at its lowest end, the African American community stood up again for me. You always had my back, and I'll have yours." You may also remember the infamous statement Biden made to Charlemagne Tha God saying, "If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, you ain't Black." Dr. Umar argued that Biden is not doing what he can to keep his promises to Black folks and isn't showing any signs of doing something any time soon. Here's why: First, Dr. Umar cited the orders and bills that Biden has already signed to protect specific groups of people: “President Biden, on your first day in office, you signed an executive order to protect the life and safety of transgenders,” Johnson said. “I have no problem with that, but you did it on your first day. So if you went out of your way begging Black people to vote for you, why haven’t we got an executive order, or any other activity, coming out of the Oval Office from President Biden to protect Black people from police?” Johnson also claimed that Biden has made the conscious decision to choose "legislation over the lives of Black folks" in order to keep white people comfortable enough to approve of the job he's doing. Dr. Umar talked about all of the legislation Biden passed by cited the fact that the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching bill has yet to be passed, despite the fact that there have been over 300 anti-lynching bill introduced to Congress. Not a single one has been approved. From the lack of police reform to supporting what he calls an "Asian Agenda," Dr. Umar let Biden have it in the most respectful way possible.
