Phillip Walton, known professionally as PHILOSOPHY, is a soulful hip hop artist, songwriter, entrepreneur, public servant and philanthropist, with an incredible story about rising above adversity. Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago, in a single-parent home, with personal ties to both the Englewood and Chicago Lawn areas, Phil represents the mass of young Black males who painfully struggled navigating the rough and violent streets of Chicago—which he captures in his lyrics. He offers his listeners, who still want to hear that Golden Era and Classic 00’s vibe of hip hop, a fresh and organic sound that will surely capture their ear.
Philosophy’s musical journey and passion for hip hop started at the age of 12- listening to college radio and watching music videos. He and his neighborhood friends formed the backpack hip hop group B.W.I.O (Brothers Working It Out), touring the Chicago circuit and creating a buzz. Not sure of his path, Phil decided to serve his Country and join the U.S. Army. After his tour he reconnected with childhood friend Antoine “Tizone” Street of BassTone Entertainment, who had recently signed a record deal with Keith Sweat’s Elektra/Island Black Music Imprint. The two put out an 18-track LP, Refusin’ Ta Die Unknown, selling thousands of CD’s from the barbershop where Phil worked as a barber.

This captured the attention of a real estate investor and manager who connected Phil with the Leo Burnett Ad Agency Music Director, Ira Antelis, who hired him as a voice-over actor. Phil recorded commercials for McDonalds, Gillespie Chrysler, Bank of America, Washington Mutual, Disney and more. This led to a meeting with music attorney, Jess Rosen. Those relationships put him face-to-face with Universal/Motown Records President of A&R, Bruce Carbone who signed Phil (aka Bigg Phill) to a lucrative recording deal.
PHILOSOPHY’s life and career took an immediate halt three months after securing a major record deal with Universal/Motown. After opening for Fat Joe and Jadakiss, to a sold-out crowd at the Congress Theater in Chicago, Phil left the theater for an after-party. While walking to his passenger car, he was the innocent victim of a drive-by shooting. Hospitalized for weeks, and being told by his doctor that he may never walk again, Phil spent several years recovering and reflecting on his life. During that time of healing, he ventured onto a new path and obtained his college degree and built a successful career providing care and services to veterans.
Still an avid fan of hip hop music and culture, Phil continued to write and record songs. He collaborated with Fel Davis, lead singer of the legendary R&B Group Public Announcement, who introduced Phil to Byron “B.J.” Woodard of Knobs Productions and the two recorded an extensive catalog that is now the foundation of his new record company: Tunnel Vision Entertainment, LLC.
PHILOSOPHY’s future is guided by positivity. He is currently putting the finishing touches on his new album “Never Too Late” with the first single “Smile” releasing in May. Making every effort to be the change he wishes to see in the world, Phil gives back to the community by donating proceeds to Chicago non-profit social justice education organization MeMA-Music, Inc., who empower youth in underserved communities, from all backgrounds and abilities, to use their unique voices to advocate for social justice and change, through the power of music.
