The International Olympic Committee Will Ban Any Apparel, Demonstrations, or Signs Related to Black Lives Matter
|
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on May 07, 2021 Black athletes are not strangers to the movement... or the world of sports trying to silence them. Whether it was Tommie Smith and John Carlos being suspended and removed from the Olympic Village after raising their fists in a Black Power salute in 1968 or Colin Kaepernick for being blackballed for kneeling during the national anthem, Black athletes have always had to fight the system to use their platforms and make their voices heard. Unfortunately, even in 2021 the fight still continues. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) just announced that any apparel, demonstrations, or actions related to the Black Lives Matter movement will be banned in the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo. Athletes will be prohibited to show any sign of the movement on the medal stand, playing field, and during the official ceremonies. It is disapointing that even though the world may love our talents, our style, and our intellect, it when we use our voices to speak out against the injustice that threatens Black lives on a daily basis. This decision by the IOC is making it clear, just like it did in 1968, that the Olympic Games does not support the movement that represents the value of Black folks.
The world competition is set to begin on Friday, July 23, 2021. We hope that the IOC realizes the error in its ways and decides to stop censoring its Black athletes. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
