Posted By: Katrina Garnes on May 19, 2021 The Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) has announced that Keisha Lance Bottoms, the 60th Mayor of Atlanta, will serve as the speaker for ITC’s Sixty-Second Commencement Exercises. During Commencement, the Mayor will be recognized for her work as a lifelong public servant and her commitment to the Atlanta community, with the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters. The virtual ceremony will air in honor of Juneteenth on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. ET and broadcast live via ITC’s Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/itcatlanta – and YouTube channel. Mayor Bottoms is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, who attended the Atlanta Public Schools and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School. She received an undergraduate degree from Florida A&M University and went on to earn her Juris Doctorate from Georgia State University College of Law. She is a lifelong public servant and the only Mayor in Atlanta’s history to have served in all three branches of city government, serving as a judge and City Councilmember before being sworn in as Mayor. Leading through service, Mayor Bottoms has demonstrated her commitment to addressing the inequalities and injustice faced by many Atlantans. With a progressive agenda focused on equity and affordable housing, Mayor Bottoms issued an Executive Order to invest $50 million in new bond funding to advance the goals of creating or preserving 20,000 affordable homes by 2026 and investing City-controlled public sources in the production and preservation of affordable housing. She also serves as Chair of the Community Development and Housing Committee and the Census Task Force for the United States Conference of Mayors. An active member of the community, Mayor Bottoms is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, Jack and Jill of America, The Links Incorporated, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. She has also served on the board of Families First, and shares her personal story of adoption, advocating for families and children engaged in adoption and foster care. “ITC is proud to welcome Mayor Bottoms as our 62nd Commencement speaker and recipient of the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters,” stated ITC President Rev. Matthew Wesley Williams, ’04. “During her term as Mayor, she has led the city through an unprecedented season of disruption. Her model and message of resilience will be a gift to our graduates who have faithfully persisted against the odds.” In honor of Juneteenth, the virtual ceremony will include a special reading of the Emancipation Proclamation and will integrate traditional African ceremonial components, such as traditional libation, traditional African drumming and music designed for attendees to experience the tradition, art, and joy of African cultures. “Celebrating this class’s graduation in such a time and on Juneteenth is an invitation to “breathe” justice, hope, and life into our country,” stated ITC Vice President of Academic Affairs/Interim Provost, Dr. Reginaldo P. Braga Jr. “This class embodies ITC’s commitment to move away from theological studies purely theoretical, making the living out of our Christian faith impactful and relevant in real-life issues so that every black life matters, and we all can breathe. Go, prophetic problem-solvers, impact this nation. It’s time.” Graduates, alumni, and supporters of ITC are encouraged to take photos and videos celebrating ITC’s virtual commencement and share them on social media using the hashtag #ITCGrad2021.
