Posted By: Kennedy Williams on May 25, 2021 The George Floyd Memorial Foundation recently gifted $25,000 to Fayetteville State University in North Carolina. Last Friday, Floyd's sister, Bridgett Floyd, presented the monetary gift during an emotional ceremony commemorating the anniversary of her brother's death. “I believe in making change for those around you, near you, far away. It’s very important,” she said during the ceremony. “My brother wanted to do a lot of things in life. He did do many things in life, but what he did not do...” Floyd added. “I will be here. I will stand to be his voice, to be the change, and continue his legacy.” According to the University, the money will go towards a new George Floyd Scholarship Fund at the HBCU to assist students. Fayetteville State University Chancellor Darrell T. Allison told the Associated Press: “This act by the Floyd family is indeed a testimony to their desire to make certain not only that the name lives on, but that his name remains memorialized in a most meaningful way for the generations to come. This act by the Floyd family is indeed a testimony to their desire to make certain not only that the name lives on, but that his name remains memorialized in a most meaningful way for the generations to come.” Today marks a year since the murder of George Floyd and the world is still reeling from the impact. Since Floyd took his last breath, one of the main officers responsible for his death has been convicted and awaits trial and the other officers involved have been indicted will violating Floyd's civil rights. Though some accountability has been dished out, we are far from justice. While it is absolutely devastating that Mr. Floyd had to lose his life in such a tragic and inhumane way, we are glad that his namesake foundation is working to positively impact the community and that the world has not forgotten him.
