Spelman College Named Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader by U.S. Department of State

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on May 27, 2021 Spelman College was recently named a Fulbright Historically Black College and University Institutional Leader for the 2019-2020 academic year. For the second consecutive year, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is recognizing the noteworthy engagement that selected HBCUs have achieved with Fulbright, the U.S. government's flagship international educational exchange program. Spelman is one of 20 HBCUs to receive this distinction. During the 2019-2020 academic year, four Spelman graduates were selected to teach English abroad as part of the Fulbright English Assistant Program, which places scholars in schools to supplement English language instruction. “Spelman and Fulbright are similar in their interest in students who are curious,” said Michelle Hite, director of prestigious international fellowships at Spelman. “They are open to the possibility that there are multiple ways of getting at answers to their questions. When students ask, who is the Fulbright looking for, I can say ‘They are looking for you!’” Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader status was conferred on Spelman for its noteworthy support for Fulbright exchange participants during the 2019-2020 academic year and its promotion of Fulbright program opportunities on campus. “HBCU participation is critical to fully representing the diversity of the United States through the Fulbright Program,” said Matthew Lussenhop, acting assistant secretary of state for educational and cultural affairs. “Fulbrighters from HBCUs carry their identities and school pride with them abroad, allowing people from other countries to learn about these accomplished individuals and about this dynamic group of American institutions and their distinguished legacy.” The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English teaching assistant programs. During their grants, Fulbrighters meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing the grantee to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think. Through engagement in the community, student teachers interact with their hosts on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity, and intellectual freedom, thereby promoting mutual understanding. Fulbright is the world’s largest and most diverse international educational exchange program. The primary source of funding for the Fulbright Program is an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. On June 3, the Fulbright Program will host a Fulbright HBCU Symposium to discuss Fulbright opportunities and resources for HBCUs.
