Google Gift $50 Million to HBCUs to Address the Diversity Gap in Tech

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on June 17, 2021 Today, Google announced that it will be gifting 10 HBCUs a total of $50 million in grants to address the diversity gap in tech. In a company blog post announcing the grants, Google chief diversity officer Melonie Parker wrote, "This financial commitment is our largest to date for HBCUs. Each institution will receive a one-time unrestricted financial grant of $5 million, providing institutions with the flexibility to invest in their communities and the future workforce as they see fit." Claflin University, Clark Atlanta University, Florida A&M University, Howard University, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Prairie View A&M University, Spelman College, Tuskegee University, and Xavier University of Louisiana will all benefit from this grant and will each be receiving $5 million. "The investments that Google is announcing today underscore the belief in our institutions. Along with my colleagues at North Carolina A&T, I look forward to building further on our rich and productive partnership, " said NCAT's Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr."We are deeply grateful for Google's generosity." FAMU President Dr. Larry Robinson. also spoke on the generous grant saying, "Google's $50M investment in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) shows a firm commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and an appreciation of the value HBCUs bring with regards to the talent and ingenuity of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni." Though Google was under fire a few months ago for allegedly discriminating against HBCU students and graduates, it looks like the major tech company is going out of its way to make it clear that it supports and values our beloved institutions.
