Two HBCU Students Attacked by Atlanta Police amid BLM protest File Lawsuit Against the City

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on June 18, 2021 Last summer during a Black Lives Matter protest, two HBCU students, Spelman College student Taniyah Pilgrim, and Morehouse College student Messiah Young, were violently attacked by a group of 9 Atlanta police officers. The students were forcefully pulled from their car, thrown to the ground, tased, and ultimately arrested. Following the incident, Atlanta Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms acknowledged that there clearly was excessive use of force and fired 6 officers and placed Mark Gardner and Ivory Streeter, the officers who physically assaulted the students, on administrative leave. Earlier this year, however, officers Gardner and Streeter were reinstated as the Atlanta Civil Service Board ruled in their favor, allowing them to not only get their jobs back but also collect back pay. The board argued that the city of Atlanta “did not follow the personnel regulations of the Atlanta Code of Ordinances in the dismissal.” Because the officers involved have yet to face any real consequences for their actions, Taniyah Pilgrim and Messiah Young are now suing the city of Atlanta. According to ABC News, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and all nine officers involved in their violent arrest included in the lawsuit. The students were held in custody for hours, were wrongfully charged (those charges were eventually dropped), and suffered physical, mental, and emotional trauma as a result of police misconduct. I pray that all officers involved face the consequences of their actions and that these students receive all that they are suing for.
