Netflix and 2U Launch a Free Online Workforce Bootcamp for HBCU Students in Tech

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on June 30, 2021 Global streaming platform Netflix is teaming up with 2U, an online course developer, to launch a pilot program created to provide HBCU students with skill development and mentorship. The free online boot camps designed by 2U, will run for 16 weeks and will be funded by Netflix and led by faculty at participating schools. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in one-on-one mentoring with current Netflix employees in tech-related departments. “Early in my career, I never saw myself reflected in the tech industry, and in turn, didn’t feel like I belonged,” Netflix Global Emerging Talent Lead Corey Twitty said in a press release. “Netflix’s Pathways bootcamp flips the switch on that feeling. Black, Latinx, and other underrepresented groups deserve to thrive in the tech industry. And for Netflix to be successful at ‘entertaining the world,’ our teams must continue to look like it.” HBCUs like Talladega, Edward Waters, and Norfolk State will be participating in the program. “Developing stronger connections between higher education and the workforce is one proven way to help close persistent gaps in diversity, access, and opportunity,” 2U executive David Sutphen said in a press release announcing the expansion of the program. “The expansion of our partnership with Netflix and the addition of our new university partners gives us the ability to reach even more students and expand career pathways into tech for historically underrepresented communities.” We are so excited to see large companies like Netflix and 2U making an effort to support students at our beloved institutions. We look forward to seeing what comes of the expansion of this program. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
