Posted By: Kennedy Williams on July 01, 2021 West Virginia State University (WVSU) will receive more than $1 million in funding for the 1890 Scholarship Program from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), it was announced Thursday. This scholarship program will encourage and support West Virginia State University students to pursue and complete baccalaureate degrees in food and agriculture sciences and related fields in order to develop a skilled food and agricultural systems workforce in West Virginia. The funding of $1,005,263.16 was announced Thursday by U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., members of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “Since its founding, West Virginia State University has been a leader in research, innovation, and development of agriculture and extension programs,” Senator Capito said. “I am pleased to see our own 1890 Land-Grant Institution receive this funding through the USDA and NIFA. This support give WVSU the tools and resources needed to advance agricultural research and education that will lead to new discoveries and advancements in the future.” “Our agriculture and agribusiness sectors are critical to West Virginia’s economy, and it is important that we continue to invest in developing a skilled workforce to support and grow these sectors. I am pleased NIFA is investing in scholarships at West Virginia State University which will provide opportunities for students interested in pursuing and exploring degrees in food and agriculture sciences. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to advocate for funding to give West Virginia students more educational opportunities and support our agriculture sectors in the Mountain State,” said Senator Manchin.
