AFJROTC Awards Banquet and Military Ball

AFJROTC Awards Banquet and Military Ball
Posted By: on May 06, 2006

Yesterday was our 31st Annual AFJROTC Awards Banquet and Military Ball! It was amazing. I did Color Guard, Trick Drill, and Drill Team. I messed up on Color Guard, but very few people saw me! The eagle got stuck in the Skylight ceiling!! It was terrible.....but I lived through it. Trick Drill did amazing. I was so happy with my kids' performance, and I love them all! Drill team was a huge sigh of relief. I was so glad that I didn't drop the rifle during the 1st marine and double hand toss! I was so nervous that I would, but I didn't! BUT I did drop it when I went down on my knees for Marnie, but very few people saw! But someone recorded it....oh well. It was great! The Awards Ceremony was memorable. One of my favorite ASIIs will be commander next year, and I am so happy for her! She cleaned up in the ceremony, too. She received Air Force Association, Distinguished Cadet, ASII of the Year, and Top Flight-for the second time in a Row! And she deserves it all. But to be honest, I was very scared that I would not be taking home an award with me. I wanted to win Daughters of the American Revolution, the qualifications and requirements described me, but I unfortunately did not win it. It went to the Co-Commander Esposito, who I will say deserves it. My gurl, Alexis, I am SO Proud of her!!! She won the American Veterans Award, and Top Drill Flight! She is amazing, and she deserves her success. And Ms. Brown, a girl who has suprised me beyond belief with her determination. She's done so much this year and I am so proud of her. She was awarded the Veterans of Foreign Wars Patchogue Post Medal. I am so happy for her. Last year I won the National Sojourners Award, and I this year, I wanted one of my favorite kids to win-and she did!! Miss Nina who is always smiling, laughing, and full of light, won her deserving award. I am proud of her, too. And by now, during the Ceremony, I was sweating bullets and was almost on the verge of tears. About 20 out of 24 awards were given out, and I had nothing. But then Sarge took the microphone and described the qualifications for the next award; The Air Force Sergeants Association Award-outstanding achievement, and exceptional leadership ability. I was unbelieveably nervous that it wouldn't be me, and for that one single time, in a short two-second period, I bowed my head, and prayed that it would be me-and Sarge announces the name- "Cadet Damina Townes!" I breathed a sigh of relief, and shot up and smiled the whole way to the podium as I claimed my honored award.

I was just ecstatic and relieved! My fears disappeared, and I walked back to my family with a huge smile on my face! And my two favorite boys in ASI, who I know had been waiting all night for it, little Smith, and Jose, two of my kids that I just adore, were awarded the last honor, of the Tuskegee Airmen. And you know I cheered real hard for them, they are two of the most deserving cadets I know who have a bright and promising future in ROTC, and I wish them the best in everything.
Then the awards for Cadet of the Year were given out. Cadet for 2005-06 went to Cadet SSgt. Weber, Cadet for 2004-05 went to Miss Anita, and Cadet for 2003-2004 was ME! I was absolutely SHOCKED! I was writing down who won which award, and when Colonel announced my name, I was like "What? Me??" I was sitting there, pondering and being confused for a second, and then I realized he did say my name, and I was shocked beyond belief!! It was unbelievable. I could not believe that I won it too! I was utterly speechless. But happy still, of course. After the Awards ceremony was over, the party began! It was slow at first because all the girls had to run and change, but after I had already started changing, my sister runs to me, and says Mom wants to take a picture, so I had to throw on my service coat and my shoes, button my shirt, and put on my tab and run out as fast as I could! My parents were very proud ofme, and I am really happy that they are.
If I didn't lost any weight from sweating like crazy, I definitely lost it while dancing. I danced with Alexis, Ms. Brown, my sisters, Elena, Danielle, and my momma!! Crazy as she want to be, and proud of her ass too, might I add. It was so much fun dancing and everything. I did not dance with any guys, and I liked it that way! My sister was my dance partner the whole night, and I love her for how supportive she is of me, and all of my ROTC business. It's great to have her around.
When the dance was almost over, and people were leaving, American Pie began to play from the speakers, and Colonel was bombarded by his kids, begging him to sing, and he did! We made a huge circle around him and Colonel walked around us, serenading us with American Pie.
Overall, it was a great night. I got to debut my commanding voice, maybe for the last time. I accepted three special awards, and got to see my kids accept their honors! I finally got to marine in public, even if I dropped it once. I did my second & worst color guard performance, but I'm still getting a ribbon for it! I just had a wonderful time, and I will truly miss this. Every last bit of it. From the Awesome achievements & awards, to the Colonel's hometown of Utah, I will never forget this. ALWAYS IN OUR MINDS!
