Posted By: Ibrahim Siddiq on July 03, 2021 I am grateful that I have lived as long as I have -- often in wonder -- as I have witnessed the life transition of many of contemporaries from my generation and even younger. What amazes me so much in this time is an apparent heavy attention and focus to the younger generations. Much of which I witness, now actually probably started decades ago, probably when I was younger. There was discussion about the concern for the so-called "generation gap," where youth and their elders appeared to have lost the capacity to communicate for mutual understanding and acknowledgement, and more over to resolve any misunderstandings. From that seed of potential generational severance, we have witnessed the continuing focus on younger attentions and interests -- Yuppies - Buppies - Gen-X - Gen-Y - Millennials. What will be the next iteration to define youth and youth interests? And what is the driver to this "interest?" It is wonderful and inspiring to acknowledge the wonderful opportunities and experiences that our youth have access to, especially achievements in education, innovation, and other community and civic activities. At the same time, there is a sense that while we adore the achievements of our youth, we almost by default should disregard, or at least relegate, acknowledgement of our elders to the rear of our socialization and development, and consequently, our potential for progress. In earlier generations, it was important to be close to the elders, whether grandparents, uncles, aunties, elder cousins, etc. There was a sense of connectivity between the generations at the occasions of family reunions, holiday dinners, and other occasions, including unfortunately funerals. Acknowledgement of the elders were not assigned only to certain days of the year, such as Father's Day, Mother's Day, and more recently Grandparents Days, and Siblings Days. There was a regular communication with family members either on a weekly basis or seasonal basis, such as summer or holiday visits. Unfortunately, current times seem to be driven more by marketing strategies rather than family sustainability; driven by product and service demand rather that family continuity and generational security. Our youth are our treasure and the wealth of our future. Our elders are the foundation of our legacies and cultural stability. We need both.
