Alabama State Basketball Alum Nia Symone Sapp Hosts Nike Series "Come Thru"

Alabama State Basketball Alum Nia Symone Sapp Hosts Nike Series "Come Thru"
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on August 12, 2021

Former Alabama State basketball player Nia Symone Sapp is the host of Nike's latest web series, "Come Thru." The series is Nike's first long-form series and is centered around bring "together game-changing Black women for real talk about real issues."

Sapp, an Atlanta native, began her Division I career playing at another HBCU, the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, before transferring to Alabama State University. After ending her career with the Lady Hornets in the 2017-18 season, Sapp shifted her focus to a professional career in communications.

During her senior year, Sapp served in the communications department at ASU and also interned with WSFA spearheaded by Shani Crayton – an ASU instructor.

"The department and the internship both shaped and molded what I am today," Sapp said. "It also opened doors for other opportunities."

After landing a job working with Lester Holt of NBC Nightly News, she made the decision to move back to Atlanta in hopes of finding more communications and media opportunities.

"I didn't have any plans when I left Alabama State," Sapp said. "I applied everywhere. It didn't matter what it was, it could have been news or sports."

Soon after moving back to her hometown, Sapp secured a part-time position working at 11 Alive News in Atlanta in the sports department. While there, she also snagged a freelance opportunity with CNN and NBA-TV, editing footage and highlights as an associate producer.

Since then, Nia Symone has been forging her own lane in the industry as the host of her own web series. Described as a show "for her, by her", Sapp's Come Thru debuted its first episode in March 2021 and focused on Black women in business. The premiere featured conversations with Shelly Bell (Black Girl Ventures founder and CEO), A'ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces MVP), and Olamide Olowe (Topicals CEO and founder).

Be sure to support this fellow HBCU graduate by checking out her show. You can catch Sapp on the Nike app through Google Play and the App Store, or by searching Come Thru on YouTube.
