Alcorn State and North Carolina Cental kicks off the football season this Saturday with ESPN/College Game Day

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on August 27, 2021 This weekend, Alcorn State University and North Carolina Central University kicks off the football season with the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff this Saturday on ESPN. ESPN’s College GameDay will be on-site with its first visit to the annual game between teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). In this matchup, Alcorn State has a chance to reclaim the SWAC East title after forgoing the spring season, leaving it open for Alabama A&M to claim the title. NCCU also opted out of the spring season and they have a sizable chip on their shoulders as representatives of the MEAC. For both coaches, the decision to sit out the spring was understandably tough, but also easy when taking into account their reasons: player safety. Plenty is being discussed about HBCU sports, particularly with NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders headlining a growing list of former NFL players breaking into the coaching ranks at HBCUs, including Eddie George, Marshall Faulk, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed - all of whom are either coaching or have surfaced as possible candidates.
