4 Careers to Consider if You Want to Work in Public Safety
Posted By: Dixie Somers on September 01, 2021 Want a job that helps protect and serve the public? What about a career that has you in the background, providing security for concerts, sporting events, or other large venues? In this post, we'll explore four different career paths that are open to those looking to work in public safety. Security GuardA security guard serves as a first line of defense against potential threats, such as theft or vandalism. Security guards typically work in office buildings, retail stores, hotels, and more. Many security companies now only hire those with a high school diploma or GED, but some may offer on-the-job training to those with experience. Private InvestigatorA private investigator gathers information about individuals and companies to be used in legal matters, such as custody battles, court cases, and more. Becoming a private investigator generally requires extensive training through law enforcement or security institutions. Degree programs are often divided into criminal justice or criminology tracks, which allow students to learn courses about forensics, investigation techniques, and other required coursework. Many private investigators get experience by working in the field, such as for local police departments. After receiving a degree, these professionals then have to take rigorous tests and often go through a process called screening before they can become licensed investigators. Police OfficerPolice officers ensure the safety of both citizens and non-citizens. Officers can pursue careers in either municipal, county, state, or federal law enforcement agencies. Job duties include patrolling a designated region, responding to emergency calls, and performing traffic control at construction sites. Most candidates for police officer positions must complete an academy program with an accredited institution and must hold a high school diploma or GED. Police officers also must meet the same rigorous physical standards as other law enforcement officers. FirefighterFirefighters are first responders to emergency calls, including fire alarms and medical emergencies. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there will be over 200,000 job openings in firefighting careers between 2010 and 2020. To become a firefighter, you must have extensive training from an accredited institution. Most academies require you to be off of work for at least nine months before considering you for a position. The above careers can be great options if you want to work in public safety. Do some research and decide which one fits your interests the best.
