Clark Atlanta University President Decides to Scale Down 2021 Homecoming

Clark Atlanta University President Decides to Scale Down 2021 Homecoming
Posted By: Kennedy Williams on September 14, 2021

A few weeks ago, Spelman and Morehouse College announced that they would be canceling their annual SpelHouse Homecoming for the second year in a row due to rising cases of COVID-19.

This week, another Atlanta HBCU has decided to alter their usual homecoming festivities. Clark Atlanta University President Dr. George T. French, Jr. recently announced that the school will be "scaling back" when it comes to homecoming celebrations. Check out the full letter from the president below:

Dear Clark Atlanta University Community,

While we were hoping to host a full in-person Homecoming this year, we remain prudent and attentive to the daily increase and spread of the COVID-19 virus in Georgia and across the nation. Therefore, with an abundance of caution, we have decided to scale down CAU Homecoming 2021 and make a hybrid event that will include a mixture of in-person and virtual events.

While the football game will still be played on October 30, 2021, the annual tailgate activity will be canceled. Additionally, we are reducing the number of game tickets available to the public to allow for physical, social distancing at CAU Panther Stadium. Access to campus on October 30th will be limited to students and employees of the University, affiliates of other Atlanta University Center Consortium institutions, game ticket holders, and pre-designated visitors.

While the health and safety of the CAU community remain my #1 priority, we must also remain focused on providing an enriching and exciting experience for our students and alumni. With the assistance of the Division of Student Affairs, in coordination with the Student Government Association (SGA) and other campus partners, we will continue planning for a one-day student festival on Sunday, October 24th, which will take place in CAU Panther Stadium (weather permitting). The University's Office of Alumni Relations and Engagement and the CAU National Alumni Association will also partner on a series of virtual alumni engagement activities to celebrate Homecoming the week of October 24-30.

As part of our usual campus protocol during this pandemic, the University will require health and safety precautions at all in-person events, including everyone wearing a mask. Additional details, along with the event theme, schedule of activities, and further information regarding CAU Homecoming will be announced in the coming weeks.

Again, our entire Clark Atlanta University community's health, safety, and well-being are my #1 priority. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility. And as we face the rising sun together, I know we can get through these challenging times come out stronger and better.
Yours in Service,

George T. French, Jr., Ph.D.
President
