Posted By: Kennedy Williams on September 17, 2021

With a diverse background spanning more than thirty years of fundraising, donor relations, institutional support, and advancement at institutions of higher education, Ms. Veronica Cohen has accepted an appointment as the new vice president of institutional advancement, development, marketing and communications at Edward Waters University (EWU).

Ms. Cohen will officially begin her tenure, effective September 27, 2021, as a key member of the president’s executive cabinet and the senior administrative staff of Edward Waters University. She will report directly to the president, providing direct leadership and operational oversight of the division of institutional advancement including but not limited to annual giving, communications and marketing, alumni relations, and development services, major gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, and support for government affairs. Ms. Cohen will provide strategic leadership in guiding the university’s philanthropic and development initiatives and will lead the charge in branding and awareness for Edward Waters University.

“We are excited to welcome Ms. Cohen and her wealth of experience in higher education to our university and our executive leadership team,” said Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr., President and CEO.

“Her demonstrated success in institutional advancement is critical to Edward Waters University as we look to shape our advancement goals and implement fundraising campaigns to support the dynamic work that is happening here,” President Faison said.

Ms. Cohen most recently served as vice president of institutional advancement and external affairs at Jackson State University in Jackson, MS where she increased annual giving by 102% and increased the overall number of donors by 71%. Prior to that role, she served as associate vice president for advancement at Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, MS and vice president for major and planned giving at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC.

“As Edward Waters University continues to make its mark on the landscape of higher education by serving as an example of growth for all of our historically black colleges, I am delighted to join President A. Zachary Faison, Jr. and his leadership team as we strive to continue toward this legacy of opportunity and change,” said Ms. Cohen.

Ms. Cohen earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, NC and a master’s degree in community counseling psychology from Springfield College in Springfield, MA. Ms. Cohen also holds a certification in fundraising management from Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis, IN and is an executive board member for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
