EBONY In Partnership with OLAY Present the Return of its HBCU Queens Competition with A Focus on STEM
Posted By: Nina Flowers on September 29, 2021 EBONY in Partnership with OLAY Presents The Reimagining of its Popular Franchise HBCU Queens with New Focus on STEM Celebrating the Next Generation of Black Women Leaders 10 Winners From Historically Black Colleges and Universities Across the Nation will be Announced in Mid-October (Atlanta, GA- September 28, 2021) – EBONY presents, in partnership with OLAY, the reimagining of its popular franchise and one of its longest-running editorial features - HBCU Queens with a new focus on STEM. The initiative is dedicated to spotlighting and recognizing collegiate Black women who are poised to affect significant societal change, both locally and globally. The search for the 2021-2022 EBONY HBCU STEM Queens is starting with an online competition that allows users to vote for their favorite Queens from Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the nation, from which 10 winning Queens will be crowned. Women in STEM have changed the world, influenced nations, and made groundbreaking discoveries throughout history. Yet, women make up a mere 27% of professionals in the STEM field and that number is even lower for Black women (U.S. Census). In response and for the first time ever, this year’s HBCU Queens program in partnership with OLAY has a new theme—STEM. Created to showcase the next generation of Black women leaders and as a way to underscore the importance of HBCUs to the Black community, the program will celebrate young women (ages 18-24) who have demonstrated the ability to inspire, lead and give back to their communities through STEM. Winners will be announced in mid-October and prizes will include an all-expenses paid trip to Los Angeles to attend EBONY Power 100, a HBCU STEM Queen Photoshoot and an opportunity to be featured in EBONY. “We are so thrilled to be able to bring back the EBONY HBCU Campus Queens initiative and to partner with OLAY - which has done incredible work to support women and women of color in STEM fields over the past few years. There are some definitive synergies with our Queens program and together we are creating a vital platform to empower our next generation of women leaders and innovators. Now more than ever, our young Black women need us to show up for them in a way that they feel seen and supported. We want them to continue to thrive and to help them unlock their full potential as contributors and agents of change in their communities, across the country and around the world.” — Michele Ghee, CEO of EBONY & JET “OLAY remains committed to equality & inclusion—and we want to help create a world where girls and young women can achieve anything they set their minds to. OLAY is elated to work with EBONY to recognize women in STEM for the first time as part of this year’s HBCU Queens initiative. STEM impacts so many industries and aspects of our lives and by diversifying STEM fields we can create a more diverse future. The OLAY and EBONY partnership will allow us to offer young women role models in STEM who look like them to provide that spark and encouragement to enter the fields of STEM. This is one step towards bringing greater equity and inclusion to our online spaces that will also get us closer to achieving OLAY’s goal to triple the number of women of color in STEM fields by 2030.” — Chris Heiert, Senior Vice President, Olay Skin Care, P&G To vote for the next HBCU STEM Queens and to learn more visit EBONY.com; Instagram: @EBONYMagazine ; Twitter: @EBONYMag; Facebook: EBONY #EBONYHBCUSTEMQueens #EBONYMagazine #OLAY #FaceAnything ABOUT EBONY Now in its 75th year, EBONY continues to be the leading authority for all facets of Black life - staying rooted as an anchor of Black culture.
