Millette (née Gurley) was born in Grenada on December 6th, 1945. Her parents are Sidney Connell and Alfina Meyers. In Grenada, Denise attended St. Giles Anglican Primary School and St. Andrew ‘s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS). In 1965, Denise met her future husband, Robert Millette at a dance at the Anglican Primary School in Grenville. Shortly thereafter, they started dating. In 1967, Denise, Samuel and Janice migrated to the United States to join their mother in Philadelphia. On March 3, 1968, Robert moved to America to be closer to Denise. After about one year of long-distance dating, Denise and Robert got married in Philadelphia in 1969. This union produced three children - Donna Millette Batts (deceased), Abena Millette, and Dalia Millette Wheeler. Shortly afterwards, Roberts’ son, Dr. Wayne Millette, migrated from Grenada to join the family. Wayne was seen as a big brother and role model for his sisters. In 1980, Denise and the rest of the family moved to Talladega, Alabama to join her husband who was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Talladega College. During her stay in Alabama, Denise attended and graduated from Jacksonville State University in Anniston, Alabama with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing. Denise spent most of her professional life working as a Registered Nurse in Alabama and Pennsylvania. She worked for the Pennsylvania State Hospital System until 2010. Denise is survived by her husband of fifty three (53) years Dr. Robert E. Millette, her brother Samuel (Iris) Gurley, sisters Janice Lawson, Bernadette Connell, Dorcas (Curtis) Lamphins, and brothers Alonzo Glen Connell, Dunstan Connell and her children Donna (Orrin) Millette Batts, Abena Millette, Dalia (Rashad) Millette Wheeler, and her stepson Dr. Wayne (Diana) Millette. Her five grandchildren are Quentin, Maya, Trinity, Orrin and Ari. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Lincoln University Scholarship Fund.
